  Direct Editing using Instant3D - New Paradigm in Solid Modelling Technology

Instant3D Direct Editing Technology
Instant3D provides Designers the flexibility to edit Designs interactively like never before even while retaining Bi-Directional Parametricity.


Parametricity Vs Direct Editing:

Bi-directional Parametric 3D Modelling technology has benefitted the Design Engineering community in many ways and has become the de facto standard.  However, a general perception exists that Parametric Modelling needs planning.  Additionally, when the designer makes changes to the design, errors arise out of conflict in relationships between parametric features and for a 3D CAD model with a large feature history tree (such as a casting) the regeneration time to update the model to latest state of revision requires additional time and computational resources.  While acknowledging the power of parametric modelling technology, Design community has been looking with interest at Direct Editing (history-free approach) to try and see if both technologies can be exploited for their inherent benefits.  Benefits of parametric modelling could be summarized as follows:
  1. Design Specifications are conveyed unambiguously
  2. Knowledge of Design can be embedded with ease
  3. Bi-directional parametricity between parts/ assembliles and drawings helps the designer accomplish changes in a systematic manner
  4. Optimization of designs using FEA can be setup and analysed with ease for multiple parametric configurations.
  5. Tolerance analysis exploits relationships between dimensions of features of size - a natural advantage for parametric modelling
Keeping in mind the Fit, Form and Functional requirements of Design, SolidWorks exploits Parametric technology while leveraging on Direct editing using Instant3D.

Instant3d can be used to directly edit parametric models as well as imported geometries by 'recognizing' features.  Instant3D when used in combination with FeatureWorks provides users with a rich set of tools to perform editing functions of their choice without leaving parametric intent and its inherent advantages.
