Considerations
During the evolution
of a design of a product, sub-system or component, several factors come
into consideration to influence the Fit, Form and Functional
aspects. Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis ( DFMEA )
helps deliberate on the critical aspects of the design in relation to
its failure modes (performance). Integrating DFMEA as a part of
the Design Document (CAD) and ensuring the same is used for Design
Validation should form the heart of the product design and
development. The advantages of this approach are many fold:

 SolidWorks provides a
Design Binder on the Feature Manager Design tree, enabling Design
Engineers to integrate any product related information such as design
considerations, failure analysis reports, test reports,
manufacturing considerations, design calculations, design
reviews, minutes of meetings during design evolution among others.
Such a document can be password protected to ensure
confidentiality. Moreover, embedding the document inside of
SolidWorks ensures it is always accessible to the team members so that
critical design considerations are known and adopted by all members of
the project.
Design Journal is a powerful mechanism to ensure that critical and
valuable design data is available for re-use as a part of the design
process without being individual-specific knowledge. This is
extremely important for any organization in terms of Intellectual
Property Rights (IPR)
considerations and product value. The knowledge wealth gets
retained by the organization and put to re-use thereby eliminating
re-construction of design data.
Integration
of DFMEA within SolidWorks
 DFMEA forms the heart of the Design process. It is
critical for the success of the product and is a reflection of Design
confidence and reliability.
DFMEA calculations, typically done using Microsoft Excel, can be
embedded inside the Design Binder with a link to the file for automatic
update.
Integration of DFMEA with Design Calculations and Parametric
Dimensional Variables and Equations is a powerful way to express design
intent.
This can be easily extended to a Family of parts and assemblies using
Design Tables.
When the Design is revisited at a later date by any person (not
necessarily the initial design engineer) the entire gamut of design
considerations and product design evolution are available for
re-use. This saves time, cost, re-work and eliminates errors.
