TolAnalyst - SolidWorks 3D Tolerance Stack Analysis

In This Issue Next Generation Technology
Engineering Design has never been more exciting and enjoyable.  With the introduction of DimXpert ( Dimensional Tolerancing Expert ) in SolidWorks, a new paradigm has arrived.  Design Specification for Manufacturing and Inspection just got easier.

GD & T Terminology:

GD&T involves four simple steps:
  1. Identify part surfaces to serve as origins and provide specific rules to establish starting point and direction for measurements
  2. Convey nominal (ideal) dimensions and orientations from origins to other surfaces
  3. Establish boundaries and / or tolerance zones for specific attributes of each surface along with specific rules for conformance
  4. Allow dynamic interaction between tolerances (simulating actual assembly possibilities) where appropriate to maximize tolerances
Keeping in mind the Fit, Form and Functional requirements of Design, SolidWorks exploits GD & T technology in its TolAnalyst module.

DimXpert is used to dimension a part fully using either the Automatic or Manual Dimensioning Mode.  Variety of options are available to convey design specifications.
DimXpert Options
Allocation of tolerance can be either using Plus / Minus Options or using Geometric Dimensioning Symbol call outs according to ASME Y14.41-2003 standard.

For example the part shown below needs to be dimensioned to reflect functional requirements.  The part mates with another part on its circular flat face (shown), gets located in the pilot bore and then oriented with the width-type feature of the notch.

Flange Part Design

Using DimXpert the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Datum planes are selected accordingly and Automatically dimensioned with the 'Turned' and 'Geometric' Options selected.

The dimensions need to be applied for the part thickness, outer diameter, central bore diameter, pattern of hole diameters, notch width and depth.

While Plus/ Minus Tolerances are applied on Features of Size involving thickness, width-type and locational faces, Feature Control Frame is used for the circular features.

The GD & T schematic layout is done per ASME Y 14.5 (2000) Standard.  The Dimensioned schematic layout created via DimXpert is shown below.
GD and T Schematic Layout using DimXpert
Note:  The PCD is not shown since it is a Basic Dimension !!
Under-constrained, exactly constrained and over-constrained conditions of a part (with its dimensions laid out) are highlighted as Yellow, Green and Red respectively.  The DimXpert results for the part is shown below.
DimXpert Status Colour Coding
DimXpert dimensional layout forms the basis for Tolerance Analysis using TolAnalyst inside SolidWorks.  The dimensional layout on drawing views can be directly provided by DimXpert saving on Time and eliminating errors arising out of dimensional ambiguities.
