General FAQ for 3DEXPERIENCE SIMULIA - Structural Designer

The Structural Designer (trigram SRD) role provides product designers with easy-to-use,
simulation-based guidance to improve product structural and thermal performance while
reducing over-dimensioning and costly prototyping. It is part of the scalable
3DEXPERIENCE® Works Simulation portfolio using the proven Abaqus technology for
structural simulation. Structural Designer is on the collaborative 3DEXPERIENCE platform so
that teams can easily share information, review simulation data and make the right decisions
rapidly. With this role, product designers get the right tools to boost innovation and optimize
products early in the design process.

Structural Designer’s target audience is product designers who are comfortable with CAD
but not necessarily with simulation tools such as finite element analysis (FEA). Structural
Designer is easy to use and provides a guided process for setting up and running simulations.
Most simulations can be set up in Structural Designer in just a few minutes, so any
SOLIDWORKS® user can get the benefit of virtual testing.

Structural Designer provides product designers with easy-to-use, simulation-based guidance
to improve product structural and thermal performance while reducing over-dimensioning
and costly prototyping. It enables product designers to assess product performance early in
the conceptual design phase, compare and share design ideas, and validate requirements
during the detailed design phase

Structural Designer can help designers improve their design by quickly showing them where
the trouble spots are and whether or not their design will meet their company’s design
requirements. For example, a design might appear reasonable at first. But when designers
use Structural Designer to simulate its behavior under load, they might find that certain
regions are overloaded and should be modified. Likewise, they might find that certain regions
are underloaded and perhaps could be reduced in size with no harm to product performance.
Easy but powerful comparison tools are also available to decide which design works the best.
Structural Designer helps users in going further than legacy design ideas, challenging the
status quo and innovating during the product development process.

Structural Designer, like Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS, is part of the
3DEXPERIENCE platform. Being part of the same platform provides a natural level of
integration between the apps. Users can design a product in SOLIDWORKS and seamlessly
go to Structural Designer to define the simulation aspects of their model. The design and
simulation models are associative. Changes in the CAD model can be updated by the user in
a single click when working with simulation, allowing for fast “what if” iterations.

Structural Designer runs simulations on the local machine or in the cloud. By default (with
embedded compute), the user can run simulations on four cores locally or in the cloud (one
simulation at a time). With SimUnits, multiple simulations can run on more cores (up to 144
cores) at the same time. Cloud computing offers more flexibility as more hardware resources
can be accessed while the user’s local computer is freed up for other important work.

Structural Designer uses Abaqus FEA solver technology, which is different from the solver
technology used by the existing SOLIDWORKS Simulation (Cosmos). Abaqus, developed by
the Dassault Systèmes SIMULIA® brand, is a worldwide leader in structural simulation. It is
a highly respected FEA solver in the simulation community, used by leading companies in
many industries (aerospace, automotive, high-tech and more) to perform virtual testing and
design certification. This high-end trusted technology is now available to all SOLIDWORKS
users.

Structural Designer delivers structural linear static, steady-state thermal, natural frequencies
and linear buckling simulation capabilities. It answers to the most common workflows any
designers would need to run for an accurate assessment of product performance.

Yes. Structural Designer can be used for simulation of individual components or assemblies
of many components, depending on needs. When working with assemblies, users have
several options for selecting the components to include, defining interactions and
connections between components for an accurate representation of the assembly.

Structural Designer focuses on providing guidance to product designers to help them improve
and validate their designs. With this focus, the simulation capabilities that are essential to
product designers have been selected. Users who need more advanced simulation
capabilities can use other structural simulation roles on the same platform, with the same
user interface and Abaqus technology.
These are the next levels:
- Structural Engineer for complete meshing and modeling as well as harmonic simulation
capabilities
- Structural Performance Engineer for nonlinear simulations involving complex materials,
complex contacts and large deformations
- Structural Mechanics Engineer for explicit dynamics, high-speed events, material
calibration, geometry preparation and simplification tools
Designers can open a Structural Designer model directly in one of the other roles and
consider more advanced simulation behaviors, if desired.

- It is cloud-based, which means that it offers natively lightweight results, collaboration, a
cloud computing option and the SaaS subscription model.
- It uses Abaqus technology, which is proven and trusted; users can scale up to more
powerful roles when needed.
- It offers the most common simulation procedures for designers: linear static, thermal,
frequency and buckling.

With Structural Designer, simulation data is stored along with the rest of the modeling data
on the 3DEXPERIENCE server. That means designers can access their simulation data from
anywhere at any time. It does not suffer the potential for loss associated with individuals
storing their simulation data locally or on laptops. It also better enables sharing of simulation
models with other users within the platform. Note that the user has an option to store the
simulation results locally.

Once a simulation is completed, a designer may be interested in communicating the model
and simulation results to others, inside and outside the company. Designers can share their
simulation findings on Swym communities so all project stakeholders can review the data
easily. They can share all their 3D simulation results via a web dashboard for unique
engineering collaboration.

Structural Designer provides cloud-based applications on 3DEXPERIENCE. Linear Structural
Validation is the main application for simulation setup, run and post-processing. Linear
Structural Validation is a client-installed application, which means that the user needs to
install it on his/her local machine in order to use it.

No. The targeted workflow should be one of these:
- SOLIDWORKS CAD models to transfer to Structural Designer using Collaborative Designer
for SOLIDWORKS, or
- 3D Creator xDesign models to transfer to Structural Designer using the Compass or 3D
Search.

Yes. Structural Designer includes applications to import and convert STEP and IGES formats.
It also supports CATIA® V5 with Collaborative Designer for CATIA (UE5).
